Tornado

Tornado Series 2015-2017
35mm slides provide the foundation for this series. This veneer creates a three-dimensional surface and also incorporates a fourth dimension, Time.
The medium of film is rooted in the past century and the grid formed on the wooden panel is a reference to a drawing method used by the ancient Egyptians.

This mathematical, static pattern is juxtaposed with the image of a tornado. I have chosen organic materials, charcoal, graphite and encaustic as a means of amplifying this polarity and also because each medium is a time capsule in itself. The encaustic is built up in layers and then flayed away using various carving tools. This method results in an undulating surface that records the violence applied to remove it.
